Winter Fly Fishing Trips
From November through March
Solitude on the Water
Winter fly fishing in Bozeman is one of the region's best-kept secrets. From November through March, the summer crowds disappear entirely, leaving the rivers quiet, clear, and breathtakingly beautiful.
During the winter months, the trout settle into their deep winter holding water, and our on-the-water tactics shift to match their changing environment. We trade the fast-paced, aggressive action of the warmer months for the rewarding challenge of highly technical nymphing rigs. Throughout the day, we focus heavily on dialing in the exact depth and presenting small winter nymphs, eggs, and worms with absolute precision. We’ll even mix in the occasional dead-drifted streamer through the deeper seams to trigger a heavy, deliberate strike from a resting trout. It is an incredibly rewarding, highly focused style of fishing set against a breathtaking backdrop of snow-capped peaks and empty rivers.
Rates & Preparation
Full-Day Winter: $600 (Includes a premium river lunch & snacks)
Half-Day Winter: $500 (Includes snacks; no lunch)
Rates are for 1-2 anglers.
We provide all premium tackle, flies, and non-alcoholic beverages, including a thermos of hot water and tea to help keep the winter chill at bay between runs.
Weather-Dependent Scheduling
Winter trips are entirely dictated by the elements. Instead of early morning summer starts, we typically push our meet times to late morning or midday. This allows us to capitalize on the warmest, most comfortable window of the day, which is exactly when the water temperatures rise just enough to trigger the trout to feed.
A Note on Gear: Proper layering is absolutely critical for an enjoyable winter trip. We will communicate closely with you in the days leading up to your trip to discuss current weather conditions and ensure you are geared up correctly to stay warm and fish comfortably.
