Bozeman Fly Fishing Report: Crayfish Bites, Clean Water & Prime Fall Windows

A stretch of mild, stable weather has settled over Southwest Montana, creating prime late-fall conditions across our home drainages. With crisp mornings and warm, sunny afternoons, rivers are settling into clear, classic autumn flows. The fish are feeding with purpose before winter arrives, and there is zero pressure to freeze at the boat ramp early. Timing your day around the late-morning through mid-afternoon window will yield the best action across the valley.

Lower Madison River: The Crayfish Surge & Rainbow Action The Lower Madison River continues to be the powerhouse in the region. While the egg bite remains productive, the big news down here is an aggressive crayfish bite. Trout are keyed heavily into larger crustaceans holding along deep ledge drop-offs and bucket transitions. Rainbow trout action has surged noticeably compared to previous weeks, alongside quality brown trout.

  • Crayfish & Streamer Presentations: Orangey-brown crayfish imitations in sizes 6 through 10 are moving the best fish. Dead-drifting them on a tight line works great, but imparting an occasional subtle strip as your rig swings into deep holes will trigger violent reaction strikes.

  • Nymphs & Eggs: Pale orange and peach egg patterns are still producing steady takes. Pair an egg behind a crayfish or lead red worm to cover both bases.

Upper Madison River: Cleaner Water & Late Starts The Upper Madison River is rebounding nicely. Sub-freezing overnight temperatures have significantly killed off seasonal weed beds, leaving the drift much cleaner and easier to fish than just a week ago. Morning water temperatures remain cold, so give the river time to warm up before expecting active feeding.

  • Nymphs: The Girdle Bug bite is back on track. Solid black Girdle Bugs (sizes 8 and 10) are pulling the most consistent looks.

  • Baetis & Midges: Downsizing subsurface droppers is paying off. Micro mayfly, baetis, and midge patterns are picking up trout once the midday warmth kicks in.

Yellowstone River: Stable Low Flows & Afternoon BWO Activity The Yellowstone River has settled into stable, clear autumn flows near Livingston. With low water volume and clear visibility throughout Paradise Valley, fishing is concentrated around the warmest part of the day.

  • Nymphs & Eggs: Staging trout are holding in slower tailouts and inside bucket seams. Tandem nymph rigs featuring small rubberlegs or large sculpin profiles trailed by egg patterns and beadhead Baetis/Perdigon nymphs (sizes 16 to 18) are the most consistent producers.

  • Dries & Streamers: Calm, overcast afternoons can spark localized Blue-Winged Olive hatches along softer edges. For streamer anglers, pulling olive or black baitfish imitations slowly through deep holding pools continues to tempt territorial pre-spawn brown trout.

Gallatin River: Canyon Eggs & Pocket Water The Gallatin River is in great shape for a quick wade session, with clear water and wide-open public access.

  • Tactics: The egg bite is rolling strong through the canyon. Dead-drift small egg imitations trailed behind a dark stonefly or beadhead prince nymph through slower boulder pockets, tailouts, and seam lines.
